The best of what?

Universal has published a three cd box called Jazz – The Best 1950–2011 (Jazz – Det Bästa 1950-2011) with tunes by Melody Gardot, Dinah Washington, Norah Jones, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Madeleine Peyroux, John Coltrane, Diana Krall, Miles Davis, Jan Johansson, Alice Babs, Billie Holiday... Most artists appear once but there are three tunes by Lars Gullin: Fine together, Happy again and Night in Tunisia and he appeares also on Stan Getz' Speak Low.
Don't ask me how they reasoned at Universal, igonore it or buy it.

Metronome 60 years

Metronome Records celebrated it's first 50 years with a double cd album with jazz sessions. Ten years later a four cd album appared: "Metronome Records 60 år". The one cd dedicated to jazz contained many of the classics from the prevoius one: The Midnight Sun, Rolf Ericson's Flight to Jordan, Moody's Mood for Love and Stan Getz' Dear Old Stockholm.
This time the pieces featuring Lars Gullin were: Danny's Dream and Ma, Whisky Sour (Hallberg) and Stockholm Sweetnin' (Clifford Brown/Art Farmer.
Gerard Hoogeveen helped me fill this gap in the discography.

Stan Getz Stockholm Sessions encore

Wax offers booth Sonya tracks

Sonya Hedenbratt recorded two tracks 1951 with Gunnar Svensson's septet – in fact the regular Ericson–Domnérus band. Perdido is already available on DRCD 381 and Dedicated to You on Invision's Godbitar med Sonya. The new cd from Wax records, Sonya Hedenbratt, CD 1031, contains booth tracks.

Dragon hits eleven

Volume 11 is here – Lars Gullin; After Eight p.m. 1954/56 Dragon DRCD 410 – with seven unissued takes. The complete contents are:

Another Esquire LP

This LP is not included in my discography: British Esquire 320: Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, James Moody; Tenor Contrasts. It contains Yellow Duck (session 50-01) with Zoot Sims and the James Moody tracks (51-03) The man I love, Again, Embraceable you and How deep is the ocean. It was reissued in 1986 in the Treasure Chest series. Thanks Ben!
Esquire Records was founded in 1947 by Carlo Krahmer. He recorded the new, modern British jazz and exchanged recordings with Dial and Prestige. Thus, Swedish musicians as Gullin, Domnérus and Hallberg were introduced in England with their own recordings as well as in sessions with guest like Stan Getz (Esquire 309), Clifford Brown (Esquire 322) and George Wallington (323). Naxos doubles

Budget label Naxos issued last year an Arne Domnérus CD with 20 recordings in chronological order from December 1950 to October 1951. All tunes where Gullin is preset are already available on Dragon DRCD 381. But a handful of Domnérus quartet tracks with (as usual) excellent piano by Gunnar Svensson may merit a purchase.

Italian reissue on vinyl

The 1959 Gil Cuppini session that produced Topsy and I'll Remember April originated on an Astraphon EP and a Broadway LP, later reissued on the Hollywood label. Now it has reappeared as Dejavu djv 2000037, still on vinyl.

The overlooked compilation

Few may have noticed – I didn't – the existence of a sampler with gems from the magnificent ten volumes Swedish Jazz 1928–1969. But it was published in 2006 as a single CD, simply called Compilation. It offers a nice selection, including the Paramount Orchestra from 1928, the Swedish Hot Quintette with Emil Iwring on violin and Stan Hasselgard in his classic masterpiece All the things you are.
And four tracks featuring Lars Gullin: Barit with the Domnérus band (50-08), Bengt Halbergs group with Side Car (53-17), Gullin's own Fedja (56-09) and Nils Lindberg's Brand New (60-03).

Italian addition – Franco Cerri

The three tunes from session 59-15, that is Lars with a rhythm section with George Gruntz, piano, and the leader Franco Cerri on guitar, is also published on an Italian reissue of the original Columbia: Jazz Classics(I) 33 FC 101 Franco Cerri and his European Jazz Stars. It's an LP (said to be Made in Italy), distributed by Japanese DIW, according to Gerard Hoogeveen. The record is a 200 g vinyl in a limited quantity of 500 copies. You can find it on Ebay for $70.

Annie Ross – but beware

The compilation "The Women I Love/Angel Eyes/1942-1954", published by Dreyfus Records, contains The Song is You from Annie Ross' 1953 Stockholm session with a Gigi Gryce small band (53-12).
Beware of certain sellers on Ebay that seem to include Lars Gullin (and other names you search for) in records where he does not appear. Thus, you'll find him in connection with Annie Ross in a Gershwin compilation. But Annie Ross recorded I was Doing All Right with Zoot, not Lars.
The same thing happens with a number of Chet Baker cd:s. It is a method to circumvent Ebay's policies!

Annie Ross in anthologies

There's an album from 1992 that includes Annie Ross' Stockholm 1953 recording of I was doing all right: The Great Jazz Vocalists Sing The Gershwin Songbook. Originally published by Blue Note Records both on cd and audio cassette. It also appears on the web as published by EMI/Capitol.
The same song is also included in the collection The Women I Love/Angel Eyes/1942-1954, published by Dreyfus Records.

Imported exported

The Stan Getz LP, Imported from Europe, is the latest to reappear as a Japanese "mini-lp" CD. Verve (J) POCJ-2719 should be equal in contents to the original LP MGV 8331. Sessions 58-06 to 08.

Monica Z a la japonaise

Three tunes from the 1960 session: Monica Zetterlund med Lars Bagge Orkester are featured on a Japanese CD, DIW-325. Session 60-05: Detour Ahead, Get out of Town, Don't Dream of Anybody But Me (Li'l Darlin').

More reissues

The 1956 Gösta Theselius album, originally issued by Bally/Sparton, is now reduced to a "mini-LP" CD from the US; Jazzhus Disk JD7602. The 1957 Philips LP P08202L is reissued on 180g vinyl as Universal International (J) UCJU9086.

1953 keeps coming back

The four Clifford Brown–Art Farmer tracks are available in a four disc compilation – Properbox 86 or the separate disc P1442.
Lone Hill Jazz offers the CD "Art Farmer; Last night when we were young" with the four titles Pogo Stick, Liza, Jones Bones and Sometimes I'm happy. Plus the whole album "Last night ...", first time on CD, with people like Barry Galbraith, Hank Jones, Addison Farmer, Osie Johnson, Jimmy Cleveland ...

The Q in Jazz

Stockholm Sweetnin' and 'Scuse these Blues (53-14) plus Jones' Bones (53-18) appear on a three disc box from Portugal: Quincy Jones: The Q in Jazz; Golden Stars GSS 5466. Sony Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, George Wallington and Lionel Hampton are among the the band leaders on the 36 tunes.

Dragon reaches number ten

Volume 10 in Dragon's impressive series of reissues from the 1950s fills a number of CD gaps: Eight Domnérus titles, two with Hallberg, four alternative tracks with Rita Reys from 1953, the rare C-H Norin tracks from 1954 an unknown (to me) Theselius session and, finally, more live takes from a Lulle Elboj broadcast from Copenhagen 1954.
