New reissues

The eight tracks with Rolf Ericson, Fredie Redd, Tommy Potter and Joe Harris from 1956 (56-17) published on Dragon DRCD 255 also appear on Tommy Potter: Hard Funk in Sweden, Jazz Connections JC 1008.
The classic pair of Flamingo/Don't Get Scared with Getz (51-08) also appears on Stan Getz: The Smoothest Operator,JSP 943, a four CD set

Summing up

Dragon rediscovers Hallberg

The new album Bengt Hallberg All Stars 1953/54 from Dragon records (DRCD 402) is already in the discography:

With Dexter and Sahib in Copenhagen

In 1962, the German producer Klaus Lorenzen made a tv movie for Radio Bremen from Montmartre in Copenhagen featuring Lars, Dexter Gordon, Sahib Shihab and Alex Riel. Klaus just mailed me, recalling the name of the piano player: Harold Goldberg. The bass player cannot be identified from this picture is Benny Nielsen. (Thanks Michael!) And could someone please locate that movie!

No more errors?

It's been quiet in the mail for some time. Does that mean all errors are identified ald all omissions reported?
Well, I found this: On Prestige EP 1341, session 53-11 is featured as "Lars Gullin and the Kenton All Stars".

Fata Morgana once more

I just found a CD on Ebay, published and distributed by the journal Musica Jazz: Gianno Basso; Rarità e inediti (rare and unpublished) that contains Fata Morgana from the 59-12 session.
In all 13 tunes w Chet Baker, Buddy Collette, Jacques Pelzer et al.

Goofers corrected

My good neighbor Ulf Schwartz just called, having noticed that I goofed on session 52-15: For Goofers Only I-II was published on Modern Music M7, a 12 inch 78, and You Go to my Head and All the Things You Are on M6, a 10 inch 78.

Setting the Brüel session right

I reported my doubts about the date in my footnote to 53-09. Three jam sessions in the Shell building: The first two with Gullin and Brüel. But on the October 1952 meeting, Rolf Berg played guitar. No guitar is heard on the published excerpt.
That leaves us with a most likely candidate: 26 January 1953 with Leif Asp and Sven Bollhem in the rhythm section.
The third candidate (19 May) is the least credible. Certainly even a small notice in OJ would have mentioned the presence of the two baritone stars!
The editor of the Swedish Jazz Discography on line, Göran Eriksson, called me the other day and strongly advocated that this is the correct information:

One solo out of ten sides

Lucio in Pescara asked about Arne Domnérus´ recording of Daydream with singer Bibbi Johnson – does it feature any solo by Lars? I decided to check a number of tunes that haven't been reissued on CD or vinyl (for obvious reasons):

Other sides without Gullin solos are a single side with singer Diana Miller, backed by Domnerus' band in the session 52-18 and two sides where the band (as Roffe Ericsson's orkester) backs crooner Bertil Attlemark on Artist B 3076. No jazz interest.

Another Flamingo

I have probably missed a number of reissues of Flamingo – Don't Get Scared (51-08), but here is one more. Both tracks on the 2 CD album: Stan Getz; Autumn Leaves, Castle Pulse PDSCD 630 (Sanctuary records [UK] 2005.) It is, by the way, an unusual compilation with Winding, Kenton, Herman and Goodman, from live performances and broadcasts, plus a number of more common quartet tracks.
Both tracks also on the album From Long Island to Stockholm, issued by (French) Universal International in 2003. I had that title attributed to a Saga (F) album.
Afraid also in the 2 CD box New York - Los Angeles - Stockholm - Boston 1945-1951, Frémeaux FA239.

Help me with this!

I need help – two tracks on Anagram CD6 with Harry Bäcklund and Bill Evans' drummer Marty Morell are not in the discography: Here Comes That Rainy Day and I've Seen with Allan Wajda p and Björn Alke b. They must have been taped in connection with Bill Evans' fourth engagement at the Golden Circle 25 October to 15 November 1969.
Add to that on the same record Stars Fell on Alabama with Bertil Löfgren tp, Bäcklund ts, Lars Sjösten p, Sture Åkerberg b, and Leif Wennerström dr.

The list grows longer ...

The forgotten tapes

Only parts of the 1964 concert at the Museum of Modern Art (Moderna museet) were published on Sonet. Now Jan Olsson reports that he has rediscovered the remaining materal, including You Stepped out of a Dream, Ablution, Detour Ahead and Fascinating Rhythm. The first two have been issued on Anagram CD7.
But Detour Ahead is played by Rolf Billberg alone with the rhythm section and strings. Nu Gullin present, so strike b from session 64-02.

Half Nelson

Half Nelson from session 56-13 is among the tunes on East West 4003.

Tenor horn or what?

My publishers and I settled on tenor horn for the Moretone session – even if Leppe Sundewall usually has been listed playing bass trumpet. The Swedish Jazz Discography on line says btp – but on the other hand claims that he played th, tenor horn, in the 1949 James Moody sessions. Photographs show him playing a bass trumpet during those recordings! On one photo from the Moretone session he seems to hold a tenor horn, which resembles a thin, small tuba. The sound, however, is very similar from the two horns.
Lennart "Leppe" Sundewall played the trumpet as well as the two bigger horns, one octave lower than the trumpet, and also appeared as a singer and showman under the name Lou Sandy.

More musicians present

On the two last sessions with The Moretone Singers (54-10 and 54-11) Leppe Sundewall th and Kurt Järnberg tb joined the group. Both musicians worked with Lulle Elboj's band at the time.
Often Sundewall's instrument is called bass trumpet - I'll be back on that subject.
The conductor Ole Mortensen spelled his last name like this, without 'h' as Torsten Asmussen pointed out. More of his corrections will be published.

Alice Babs on a Cupol LP

Maybe the two Alice Babs sides from session 51-09 barely merit inclusion in a jazz discography. Well, Rolf and Arne take eight bars each on Kärlek, säg vad är de´, a translation of The Trouble with Love is Love by her husband Nils Ingvar Sjöblom, so why not? I included them for completeness, and because the live version of Be-bop-Knopp, (A little be-bop bud), had a solo by LG in 51-13. Gerard Hoogeveen reports finding the two tracks on a Swedish LP: Alice Babs – Paper Doll, Cupol CLPM 6012, pressed in Haarlem, The Netherlands, by CBS who owned the label.
(On other tracks, Alice is backed by the "Paris Orchestra", Sten Carlberg's trio with Thore Swanerud and Gunnar Johnson, the Estrad Elitorkester 1947, Putte Wickman, Kenneth Fagerlund and the Hep Cats, a dixie band.)

Both tracks reappeared on a 1973 LP, Cupol CLP 96, in a reissue series called Gamla favoriter (old favorites).

Why did I forget the Sparton?

The LP "Swedish Jazz; Gosta Theselius and All Stars" was published 1956 in the USA by Bally and in Canada (also the UK?) by Sparton – the same record with number 12002. The Canadian Cover has the Sparton name printed along the upper edge on the Bally cover. Sparton printed their own red labels – Bally's were blue.
This session was brought to my attention by Bengt-Arne Wallin, who recalled a session organized by a Belgian producer (Jacques Kluger).
A Swedish issue appeared some twenty years later on Gazell. Lars solos on Cool and Cozy, The Swingin' Thirds and his own Bugs. The second baritone solo on Cool is played by Lennart Jansson.

Dragon Records has published volume 9 in their Gullin series, including the titles:
